I was fortunate to be asked by my colleague John Stan in Canada to try the new FasciaBuddy square cupping system he created.
I am a fire cupping advocate and still use this traditional cupping system frequently. However, after trying the FasciaBuddy system, it has maximized the ability of cupping’s myofascial decompression affect during functional movement patterns. Glass fire cups will often lose their vacuum effect and fall off during the patient’s movement, often resulting in breaking. FasciaBuddy uses square plastic cups that are uniquely designed to be placed side-by-side, creating an effective chain to match the contours of the body like no other system I have seen. For example, in treating supraspinatus tendinopathy, different sized cups can be aligned in the supraclavicular fossa, which is wide medially and narrower laterally. This provides an effective and therapeutic decompression of the underlying tissue as the patient moves into various pain-free ranges.
In addition, the FasciaBuddy system, like fire cups, can slide on the body creating a guasha- like affect. However, the rounded corners of the FasciaBuddy cups provide useful therapeutic effects that fire cups cannot. The rounded corner of the FasciaBuddy cup can be tilted so that the rounded corner is directed along myofascial borders that effectively releases connective tissue tension. One example is using the sliding cup method technique to release high tension areas along the edges of the longissimus and iliocostalis muscles laterally as well as the longissimus and spinalis muscle medially.
I have both styles of cups in my clinic i.e. the fire cups and the FasciaBuddy set depending on what I want accomplished.
I love cupping and have been using cups in my practice for a long time. When I saw the FasciaBuddy Square cups, I was curious and thought I would jump in and try them out.
At first, there was a bit of a learning curve on how to create a decompression zone and how to use the various sizes. But after only a short time, these cups are the only cups I use! Building a matrix has been powerful for tissue response and decompression and I love being able to create zones of healing around the body. With previous cupping sets I’d never use the smaller cups, but when building a matrix I use them all the time to fill in gaps or build toward smaller areas.
The tray they come in has also been a great way to stack and store numerous sets or extension pieces – I love how organized and tidy my cupping area looks now which is an extra bonus!
